Through metaphors and examples, Dr. Orsini discusses the benefits of running an organization as a system. She compares and contrasts a systems approach to management with what exists in many companies today. She discusses the interdependence of the different functions of the organization and how barriers between functions create suboptimal behavior and results. Conflicting goals, confusion, diffusion, and displacements result in poor performance and chaos. Ongoing chaos (stable chaos) is sometimes difficult to uncover, as it is repeatable, easy to document, and eligible for ISO status. Dr. Orsini clarifies points through examples from organizations with which she has worked.
